Route 66 is a highway that links Chicago, Illinois with Santa Monica, California. Its total length is about 2449 miles. The route leads from Chicago to St. Louis, Missouri, Oklahoma City, Santa Fe, New Mexico to Flagstaff, Arizona and continues via Barstow, California to Santa Monica. It exactly starts at Michigan Avenue and Jackson Boulevard in Chicago and ends at Santa Monica Boulevard and Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica.

Route 66 winds thorough 8 states, passing 300 towns and cities, crosses three time zones. It leads over rolling hills, forests, along small and by endless rivers, traverses mountains where one is forced to navigate curvy roads and crosses plateaus towars Texas and deserts.

On the individual maps it can be seen that the route covered different areas during different time periods. It was re-routed several times, but overall the same general areas remained.
